Happy is he who remembers his progenitors with pride, who relates with pleasure to the listener the story of the greatness of their deeds and silently rejoicing sees himself linked to the end of this goodly chain ------- GOETHE
My father, Francis Asa Hahn was born Oct.24,1923 in the family home at Elgin (Port Orchard) Washington. He joined two older brothers and eventually there would be ten children born to Arthur and Jenny Hahn.
Dad attended a simple one room school house in Elgin. His father was on the school board part of the time.Dad used to say he walked ten miles to school every day, even in the snow, when ever I complained about having to walk somewhere.I was never sure that was true because the schoolhouse was gone and he always exaggerated stories to tease me, I was the gullible one :-) > Elgin School Class Photos
He never finished school, typical of country children of that era. Instead, he joined "Hahn & Sons Logging Company" and learned the trade of his father and older brothers.
After the death of his Grandmother Bertha, Grandfather Albert continued living with the Arthur Hahn family until his death in 1930.The immigrant generation corresponded with family in Germany but the American born children didn't read or write German so contact after one generation was lost. Only a few German words and traditions survived.
He loved baseball and played for Hahn's Playland Resort and later for Gig Harbor Team but always wore his Hahn Playland jersey. > Gig Harbor Team Photo
When World War II broke out against Germany, Dad was an American patriot and joined the navy and so did two brothers Arthur "Butch" and Lewis"Louie".Dad served on the USS Block Island and was sunk at sea >history and photos
While on leave in Washington D.C., he met and married my mother. After the war they lived in Port Orchard and Dad resumed work with "Hahn and Sons Logging".> marriage photo
Grandfather Hahn died young in 1947 from an inherited heart disease that would in time affect and claim the first four sons. After Arthurs death the family was shattered. The resort and farm were sold. The older sons continued as "Hahn Brothers Logging" for a while but it eventually dissolved and they spread out, planting their roots in different parts of the state.
Francis Hahn family settled in Gig Harbor,Wa. Dad worked his inherited occupation for a private logging company. He died at age 42yr. on Father's Day, June 16,1968.
At this time in the year 2001 he is descended by 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
His first grandson John Francis Hahn 1972- 1997
I made a memorial page for him ..... John
